Rogers gets go-ahead for Toronto news channel

Canada is getting a new 24-hour news channel in the Greater Toronto area. The CRTC has approved an application from Rogers.

The new channel, called CITY News Toronto, enters a crowded market. It will compete again  CP24, CTV Newsnet and CBC’s Newsworld.

In a statement, Jamie Haggarty of Rogers Media Television said:

Torontonians and residents of the GTA will now be able to enjoy greater diversity when it comes to local news, weather and sports. Citytv’s unique brand of news and information, complimented by our ethnically diverse OMNI stations is the perfect combination to deliver a full-time channel committed
to the local perspective.

The proposal was opposed by Pelmorex Communications, owner of City News (Toronto) and The Weather Network, as well as CTVglobemedia, the owners of CP24. But the CRTC decided that:

CITY News Toronto would provide a niche news service targeted to Greater Toronto. In contrast, CP24’s mandate is and has always been to serve the region of Southern Ontario.

The new Rogers channel is expected to be up and running in 2009
